Basmati Rice: Cultivation Process

Basmati Rice Cultivation
The basmati rice manufacturers cultivate basmati rice traditionally in India. Almost half of the production of basmati rice is done in India. But when cultivating the farmers have to consider the following important factors.
For cultivating basmati rice, the soil quality must be good and rich in nutrients. The soil must be able to hold water – as moist soil is needed for rice growth. The ideal soil ph for basmati rice cultivation is around 5.0-8.0. And, the ideal soil for basmati is loamy and clayey soil with enough aeration and a good quantity of humus.
The healthy basmati rice plant grows in moderate climatic conditions. Warm sunny days are ideal for the growth of these plants. The ideal temperature of basmati rice cultivation is 25-35 degree Celsius. Even a moderate amount of rainfall is needed for cultivation, but rainfall must be evenly distributed. Frost can damage the crop, so it has to be avoided. Even too high or too low temperatures can spoil the basmati rice cultivation.
This rice variety is propagated through seeds, which are initially sown in nurseries and later transplanted into the main field. For basmati rice cultivation, the seeds must be healthy and disease free.
Spacing and Planting Season
The average spacing between each rice plant must be around 30cm*25cm. The planting season for rice plant transplantation is usually the month of July.
The rice field must remain well irrigated and flooded with water for good two weeks. Later, water is soaked by the soil. But to keep the soil moist, irrigation is must for two weeks. During the rainy season, the excess water is drained out of the field while the remaining is sustained.
Fertiliser and Manure
The manure is important during the field preparation to add macronutrients. The fertilisers are also important for providing nitrogen to the plant to better vegetation. Even micronutrients must be applied whenever needed in appropriate doses.
The Yield of Basmati Rice
The basmati rice yield varies, depending on its different varieties. The average yield, however, is the 25-35 quintals per hectare of the cultivated land.
TThe harvesting is done when grains are mature and starts turning yellow. At this time the grains have low moisture content and the crop is harvested manually with sickles or with harvesting machines, depending on the field size.
Before sending the grains to the basmati rice exporters, the yield is dried in the sun or with artificial dryers. After that the milling, hulling, de-husking, etc. processes are followed for enhancing the appearance of basmati rice. The basmati rice is also polished before sending to the basmati rice suppliers for transportation.
The export of basmati rice from India to different parts of the world is done in well-packed gunny bags. The rice is packed after proper cleaning and loaded onto large trucks for distribution to different regions or parts of the world.
